Studio Production: Creating the Pitch - With Research

The Pitch - With research
Below I will be going through the slides of my pitch and demonstrating the reasons behind them as well as the necessary research that went in towards making the decisions I made for my show.

The Logo

With the use of an online logo maker, I decided that I wanted to have something simple. Something that I would also be able to animate and have the theme carried throughout the show. When I stumbled upon the design of the diamond, although it was rough, I thought it was a good starting point.

Slide 3; Style and Tone
As mentioned above, My style and tone for this show would consist of rich purple hues and a multitude of glitter as well as glittery props. With the use of the colour chart displayed on http://www.color-wheel-pro.com/color-meaning.html

I thought it would be necessary to have a colour scheme that consisted of purple because that represents royalty. I want the show to have an exquisite and inviting energy to it and by doing research on colours, I feel as though I have chosen the right theme for the show.

Slide 4; Target Audience

As mentioned in more detail in my previous post, Lifetime TV is my chosen target channel due to its high rated fashion content. My target age group will be 16 to 25 due to it's fun, lighthearted content.
I took a look at the the other shows they have on this channel to further my knowledge and it is evident that the light hearted yet dramatic tone of the channel is carried through out the branding.

Slide 5; Contributors
In order for me to best illustrate what style I was going for for the show, I knew it would be best to find accurate examples of presenters who I thought would best suit it. My 3 main presenters where chosen based on their personality and their ability to freely interact with people. I used these videos to make my decision;

Holly Willoughby;

What I loved about this video is the way she is able to interact with the general public in an unscripted way. In my opinion she brings a great energy and this is something I would want for the show. She would also fit with the target demographic and would therefore allow the viewers to relate to the the overall show more.

Miquita Oliver;

Maya Jama;

What I love about Maya is her ability to not be phased by whatever situation she is in. She speaks to everyone normally and as if they have been friends for a while. A positive energy is something that I would love to bring to the show as this would inspire audience to get involved. Since my show is quite reliant on audience involvement, I would want a host that is able to get the crowd going whilst maintaining a professional atmosphere. This is why I believe that having an idea of the characters I want would allow me to weed through who would be better for the role if it came to it.

slide 6/7/8; Rounds

Before making my rounds, I wanted to find out what the rules would be for game shows. I initially went onto OFCOM for rules and regulations but I was unable to find anything about game shows specifically. All information about fairness was directed toward television in general. I found rules on BBC's website about what their requirements would be for shows and I used this as a guideline when creating my game rounds.

I used this for reference when thinking about the games. Even though this is specifically for BBC, I thought the rules can be applied to my show and I used this as a guideline.

Round 1

The reason felt that this would be a good idea is because when you have games that include elements of chance, factors that cannot be controlled by the contributors, it created a greater element of surprise. Especially when it's against time. I think these are two aspects that would keep the pace up of the show. A faster pace is what I'm going for.

I was inspired by the Victorias Secret fashion quiz where a selection of models came together for a separate segment. They all had buzzers which were tested first before moving onto the actual game. I enjoyed the fact that they were able to have laugh in between each question. Although it was a slightly slower pace than I would have, I still think this is a good reference piece to show the rest of the team if they want an idea of what I would be going for in this round. I also liked the colour scheme and slight branding that was carried through out.

Round 2

With this round, I stuck with the fashion theme and thought this would be a good idea to make use of the screens. In my opinion it is a good idea to mix it up and now have visuals. When creating this round I got inspiration from an episode of Celebrity Juice (13:00 minutes) ;

What I loved about the "Face For Radio" game was the idea of audience involvement prior to the questions of the guests. I found this idea interesting and thought it would be an interesting element to incorporate within my show due to the interactive nature of it. Hence why I have chosen to switch it up a little but still keep the main concept.

Round 3

For this round it was my intention to follow the brief as best as I can by having audience involvement instead of them to just sit there and watch others have fun, they would be a part of this fun. I also thought this would be a perfect use of the VTs. The idea of a rail "dash" comes from the activity of a "Trolley Dash". This is a task which is usually set in a supermarket or a store, contestants would usually be given a short amount of time to run around and fill up their trolley as quick as possible. As demonstrated in the video below;

The inspiration came from videos such as these;

What I loved about this was the energy that was kept throughout, since this something that I would want to incorporate within my show. This was the basis of my idea and so I took it and elaborated on it and made it unique to my show.

Round 4
This idea was inspired by a segment on Celebrity Juice. When I saw it I instantly fell in love with the idea because it brought an element of humour and fun to the show because of how far off the guesses really were from the original image.

"The incredible hulk's asshole" (9:35)

in this game, they switch up the conventional game of "hole in the wall" and transform it into something else. Celebrity juice has made it a lot more sexual than normal and that isn't exactly my theme or target audience but what I will take is the element of the asking questions and interacting with each other as I believe that is entertaining.

Round 5:

I did not have any inspiration for this task however I knew that I wanted to upkeep the fast, fun pace that I wanted throughout. I wanted to keep the element of surprise flowing and allow this game to be as fair and unpredictable as possible. I also really wanted to follow the brief by again having the audience as involved as possible. I wanted to research the effects that audience involvement could have and I came across this quote;

"Mass Media public discussions construct a role for the ordinary person who participates in them...They affect our expectations of social debate...and our skills in taking part"
it "trasforms the conventions of public discourse...Through the construction of social identities"

(Livingstone and Lunt, 1994)

Even though in the context mentioned above they were talking about political debates where members of the public can join, it still relates to the fact that the involvement within mass media can challenge ones self and the way they receive things. This for me is very important as I would want the audience to feel challenged, even if it was the slightest, some sort of involvement is better than nothing.

The Running Order;
For my running order I wanted to make sure I could display to the judges that this show will be able to fit within the 30 minute slot. This is why I took some time thinking about how long each segment would take. I have happy to feel confident about the running order as I felt like the time was distributed effectively.

Camera Plans:

For my camera plans, I wanted to make sure that all avenues of the production would be covered. For my multi cam set up I have utilised 4 cameras with the possible 5'th jib if possible but I wanted to make sure the main parts where covered. I thought it would be interesting to set the show out like a runway to further enhance the fashion theme.

The USP and SWOT Analysis
 With any pitch its important to identify your SWOT and Unique Selling Point.
Articles.bplans state you must;

  1. Be truthful. It probably goes without saying, but if you’re not truthful during this process, the entire analysis won’t be effective.
  2. Allow for feedback. As you’re brainstorming strengths, make sure your employees are comfortable offering their feedback. You may not agree on some strengths, but it’s best to talk them through.
  3. Stay focused. You want to hear many viewpoints, but when you get several people in a room, time can get away from you. Keep the group on task.
  4. Keep your list of strengths handy. Keep your list in an accessible spot. You’ll analyze all of the data that you collect over the next few days at the end of the week.

Here is my final slide where I have tried to be as honest as possible. I feel confident about my pitch and so the next step would be to present it to the commissioners and hope for the best. Even if I don't get it, I still think that this will be a great experience for me.
