Studio Production: Evaluation Of Project
What did I do for this unit?
For this unit I was chosen to be Lead Camera and VT Producer. These roles both had their own challenges within them but there were many aspects of it that made it worth while. The other part of this unit required me to create my own television idea from scratch. This in itself is already an achievement because I never thought I would've been able to create something that I would actually like and be proud of in the end.
PITCHING
If I'm being completely honest, I genuinely think I should've tried harder during the pitching stage. I feel as though I did not do my idea justice and I think that if I believed in myself more than maybe everyone else wouldv'e believed in my idea too. I felt like I did a good job at researching and gathering all the right information needed to create a successful pitch but my delivery let me down. I really tried my best to meet the criteria of the brief by having audience involvement and a good target audience that wasn't so scattered. In my opinion the idea what a feasible one. In the future I will come better prepared and not let my nerves get the best of of me. I think someone who is more confident in themselves who's idea may not be the best would excel genuinely because they believe in their work. This experience has taught me to prepare and understand my own self worth when it comes to my ideas. Nevertheless, it was a great experience and I learnt a lot from it.
ROLES
What went well
I really enjoyed this part as I took the plunge and tried a role that had more responsibility and was outside of my comfort zone. This for me is a very big improvement as I usually keep it safe and stick to roles that I know I may excel in just because that is what I'm used to. I am not used to having a creative decision as part of a bigger project and it was great to be a part of this and be involved. Whether it was having an idea for a shot variation to a better line in the script, it was really nice to be a part of something where my idea mattered. Having people listen and value my opinion was nice, at times I think it could've been better overall as a class but it still wasn't too bad.
Cameras
I also realised that I actually enjoyed writing the scripts but my passion lies behind the camera. I really enjoyed the problem solving and being a part of a team. Being behind the camera whilst being recorded as live gave me a bit of a rush, maybe a little bit too much where I became too nervous and made more mistakes in the TX show than the rehearsals but this is a learning curve for me.
Budgeting
I learnt the importance of budgeting as part of a bigger group because once everyone has split up and you're given a budget, you almost forget about the other departments and their budget. After having squabbles with classmates about the budget, I learnt that it is important to be considerate but to also stand up for yourself when you know that something isn't quite right. It is important to keep a fair working environment where everyone feels as though they are treated fairly and so this is what I wanted to achieve.
SHOOTING DAYS
What not so well?
One of the things that I learnt is how important it is to do preliminary tests on your equipment way before you shoot. Give yourself enough time so that if there is anything wrong with your equipment you will be able to go back and replace it or get it fixed. If we had checked the sound before, I think that would have minimised our need to re shoot.
There were times where I felt as though things could have been avoided if my points where heard. I don't know whether it is because I wasn't explaining myself properly but at one point I was trying to explain the importance of getting coverage of the closer shots from the angle of where the camera was placed due to the style of shoot we were going for because if not then it wont be able to cut in. No one listened and thats exactly what happened in the edit. So maybe that is something that I need to improve on but it did put a downer on the end result for a little bit.,
What went well?
Shoot days went well because of the actor that we had. It really opened my eyes to how smoothly a shoot could go when you have a contributor who is willing and able to be a part of your project. I look forward to working with people like this again, now although I understand that it wont always be like that, this is something that went well for us this time and it really made shooting go a lot easier.
Working alongside like minded individuals was a great experience although I felt like sometimes I was treading on toes when trying to help or do my role. It is never my intention to stop someone else from doing their job but sometimes when I am too passionate about getting an end result, I can understand if that may seem that way. Nevertheless, I understand that one of my personal challenges will be finding the balance between constructive help and executing my own roles.
EDITING
I learnt how important it is to sit with the editors because in the end you are a team and that is what matters. It is good to learn the balance between working together and letting someone do their job and that is something that I learnt during this period. It was a real struggle to just let go and let others take charge but I really hope to improve on this as I am so used to doing everything myself so this was a major readjustment for me.
FINAL RESULT
After watching the final edited version and seeing the VTs, it was amazing to think, "wow, I created the scripts for those!" seeing work that you put in a lot of hard work and research for is a very rewarding experience and I wouldn't change it for the world. I have learnt so many new skills such as Vision Mixing, How to operate the graphics programme in the gallery, how to write a script as part of a bigger production, and most importantly how to work in a team. At times it may not have been perfect but we are all human and gradually learning. I will be applying as many skills learnt towards my future projects and also continue to learn how important it is to differentiate constructive criticism and overstepping someones job. I will continue to learn how to step down and let others take the lead. Overall I have enjoyed this project and the lessons learned are valuable to my future projects.
