News Unit: Researching colours and their meaning
Colour Research
In order to start creating and experimenting with the branding colours, I thought it would be important to gain a greater understanding on what colours mean ad how they are perceived universally. It is important for us to use the relevant colours for our target audience.
Here is a colour guide that I found on an online marketing website called helpscout.net. I find this helpful as it allows me to get a visual representation of the colours and what it means.Of course these are not set in stone but are general rules that companies tend to abide by.
Of course there are misconceptions about colours and their persuasive abilities but there are studies that prove how much of a difference colour schemes make. For example;
In a study conducted by Satyendra Singh, (Department of Administrative Studies, University of Winnipeg, Canada) She found that;
- People make up their minds within 90 seconds of their initial interactions with either people or products.
- . About 62‐90 percent of the assessment is based on colors alone.
- Prudent use of colors can contribute not only to differentiating products from competitors, but also to influencing moods and feelings – positively or negatively – and therefore, to attitude towards certain products.
How will i apply this information?
So it is clear to me that colours can play a big role in the decisions people make and the attitudes they have towards products. It is important that we get it right when creating our branding. Since our target audience will be aged range from 15 to maybe 25, I want it to be accessible to all. Not too colourful or girly, I think we should take a minimalistic approach but still have the slight use of color.
Another idea could be to head towards the purple type of text as we are trying to be edgy and imaginative.
